In 1717 the French Academy of Arts created the category Fête galante in order to accept Antoine Watteau’s paintings which fitted nowhere at the time. His idealised dancers, women and shepherds, engaged in erotic play in a fantastic nature. later Fêtes galante art acquired a wider meaning and was used to represent groups of elegant men and women of the upper class in outdoor or indoor settings, engaged in amorous play.
